About the project
The project ”Representation, Development, Education, Participation – Art in Society in 19th – 21st centuries” will explore different aspects of artistic production and presentation of art from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day in Croatia. This period was marked by major structural changes in society that regularly had (and still have) an impact on art, not only in the sense that they are reflected in the formal characteristics of art works and architecture, but also that their form and content have been used to achieve social goals, both at the level of specific communities and society as a whole.
The aim of the project is to expand on the research that are based on artistic theory and practice of social history and the social present, which in the Croatian research area of the history of art and visual communications has only been partially investigated. The changes that took place in the relationship between art and society in the mentioned period will be studied through four objectives: 1) through the way in which the space and identity of communities were shaped, 2) through research into the role of art in the development of social standards, 3) through research into approaches to education about art and through art at the level of society and specific communities and finally 4) through research of collaborative relationships in the production and communication of art.
The project team comprises 13 researchers working at all Croatian universities where art history is taught and at two museums. They all specialize in various topics related to the Croatian art history in period from the 19th to the 21st century: painting, sculpture, architecture, visual communication, history of art history and, museology. One third of the team (5 researchers) is made up of young researchers for whose development this project can be of utmost importance. During the implementation of the project, it is planned to employ one PhD student.
